Using Education to Overcome Fears and Save Snake Lives

Library show

Snakes may be the most villianized animal on the planet and yet they're actually one of the most beneficial.

  • The smallest snakes protect our food sources from pests that our crops
  • Larger snakes eat disease spreading pests like mice, rats, fleas, ticks and mites
  • Venom from many venomous snakes is used in medicines that keep people alive.

Without snakes we would be in a world of hurt, but because of fear and misinformation most people kill every snake they see. Through education we can help people overcome their fear and that's what led Louisiana Snake ID to create the Snake Life Foundation.

Snake Life Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to wildlife preservation, public education, and community engagement surrounding one of the most misunderstood animals there is, snakes. Our goal is to replace fear with understanding and respect through education, conservation, and outreach. Cultivating a love of nature and snakes benefits not only snakes, but all animals, for future generations. This includes the protection and conservation of their habitats as well. Understanding and appreciating snakes for all they do for us is the only way to save their lives, so we support and offer events and opportunities for education and community outreach that are effective across all ages. Making sure to include a focus on children in these efforts allows respect for these misunderstood animals to begin at a young age, giving it a chance to grow over a lifetime. For far too long fear has dominated how people feel about snakes and our mission is to turn this around. Hurting nature ultimately hurts people. Loving and respecting nature can be a catalyst for doing the same towards our fellow man. We want to spread this mindset locally, across the United States and even on a global scale.
